The Ontario Regional Resource Group (ORRG) formed in 2007 to foster the growth of a strong network of grandmother groups in Ontario, supporting the Grandmothers to Grandmothers Campaign at the Stephen Lewis Foundation. ORRG helps Ontario's grandmother groups with group development, fundraising, advocacy, and public education by developing educational materials, organizing workshops and regional meetings and by helping groups stay in touch with each other.
As of November 2009, there have been seven Ontario/Toronto meetings, with representatives from many grandmother groups. The meetings have included workshops on fundraising, advocacy, raising awareness, media and communications, and how to sustain your grandmother group. Best of all, the meetings have provided a terrific opportunity for all of us to meet, learn and motivate.
Other grandmother groups across Canada have formed alliances and networks to help and motivate each other, to share ideas and, sometimes, to work together on projects. But there are now over 100 grandmothers groups in Ontario! ORRG works with the SLF staff to coordinate activities, and aims to supplement the support to grandmother groups that they provide. Our challenge is to help our member groups learn and network, without creating additional layers of bureaucracy.
