Welcome to the National Advocacy Committee ONLINE!
The National Advocacy Committee (NAC) of the Grandmothers to Grandmothers Campaign exists to fulfill a promise. Among other things, during the original Grandmothers to Grandmothers Gathering in August of 2006, Canadian grandmothers made a promise to the African grandmothers that we would be their voice here in Canada where it mattered.
To “advocate” is “to plead a case”, “to argue in favour of”, or “to speak for another”. To do advocacy is to use a variety of methods to make policy-makers and the public not only AWARE of a situation but PERSUADED that action is needed in light of that situation.
This is the work of the National Advocacy Committee: to raise awareness and to persuade such that long-term solutions are found for the problems burdening African grandmothers.
Now, we know that policies cannot cure AIDS. We also know, however, that policies can be shaped here in Canada and elsewhere that can change the realities of life in sub-Saharan Africa. Policies can be enacted that ensure access to medicines, for example. Policies can be enacted that address extreme poverty. Policies can be enacted that guarantee at least primary education for all children in African countries.
We invite you to join us and to help us, in large ways and small, to keep that original promise to be a voice. Advocacy is one leg of the three-legged stool we have built here in Canada to support the grandmothers of sub-Saharan Africa and the children they are raising. Along with fundraising and education/outreach, advocacy allows us ways to make a difference.
Come, join your voice to ours that together we may be a voice for the grandmothers of sub-Saharan Africa!

can change the world; indeed,
it is the only thing that ever has”
