Spring to fall of 2008, the National Advocacy Network is sponsoring a cross-country petition to be presented in the House of Commons just prior to International Women’s Day in March of 2009. We hope to gain 100,000 signatures to demonstrate to Parliament the genuine concern Canadians have to see a commitment to more and better aid across the board in the face of the devastating conditions faced by so many people around the globe.
In particular, of course, we are concerned to see benefit to the grandmothers and AIDS orphans of sub-Saharan Africa as part of the impact of such a commitment. Our concern is to see an increase in our contribution to The Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria, legislative revisions to the Canadian Access to Medicines Regime and, at long last, a fulfillment of a decades old pledge our country made to increase our commitment to Foreign Aid to 0.7% of our Gross National Income.
The final deadline for submission of completed petitions is January 10, 2009. That said, individuals and groups are encouraged to begin sending bundles of petitions to the address identified in the materials as they are accumulated so we can have interim reporting of numbers.
