Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria (GFATM) |
|
Canada has supported The Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria (GFATM) since its inception in 2002. The Global Fund has proven to be a highly effective program that gets financial resources and services to where they are most needed, including countries in sub-Saharan Africa.
In the first commitment stage, Canada was the eighth largest donor to the fund. Federal Budget 2008 did include an increased contribution to this Fund, after many months of silence. The increase raised Canada's contribution to 2.5% of what the Fund actually needed.
The Canadian Grandmothers for Africa: A National Advocacy Network is pushing the Canadian government to increase its contribution to 5% of whatever is needed for the Fund to succeed for the next five years.
