Increase in Official Development Assistance |
In October of 1970, Canada, along with other richer countries in the United Nations, agreed to increase our resource aid flows to developing countries to a minimum of 0.7% of our Gross National Income. We have never reached this target nor even set a timeline to achieve it.
In 2007-2008, Canada committed 0.28% of our Gross National Income to development and aid. In 2008-2009 the amount projected is 0.3%. Eleven donor countries, including Sweden, Norway, France and Great Britain, have reached their 0.7% commitment or have timelines to do so.
Among others, the countries of sub-Saharan Africa, beset by poverty and the horrific AIDS pandemic, need development assistance in arenas of health care, microcredit, education and nutrition, to name a few. Right now grandmothers and AIDS orphans in these countries are struggling to survive and to maintain a degree of civility in the process. Canada could be doing much more to help.
