An Introduction to Advocacy—Granny Style!

Simply put, advocacy is the deliberate process of influencing those who make policy decisions. For members of the National Advocacy Network, the changes we seek are always those that will most benefit the African grandmothers and the AIDS orphans in their care.

Advocacy work complements the awareness and fundraising activities already pursued by grandmother groups across Canada.  It differs from these activities in that it takes the concern for grandmothers and AIDS orphans into the public or civil sphere, employing letter-writing, meeting with elected officials, working with the media and otherwise applying our energies to see that helpful policies are created, reformed and implemented.
