Since 2007, about 60 “grandmother” hosts have been welcoming fellow members of the Grandmothers Campaign to their homes for Beds WithOut Breakfast (BWOB). This programme is intended for members of registered grandmothers groups, regular SLF volunteers, and, in some cases, their friends and family. It is not open to members of the general public. Hosts provide accommodation for 1-3 nights in return for a donation to the Stephen Lewis Foundation’s Grandmothers Campaign. Despite the name, many hosts include a light breakfast and all include a warm welcome.
How does it work? Interested hosts should contact Linda at email@example.com for details on getting registered. Would-be guests may also contact Linda or the hosts directly. Please indicate the name of your grandmothers group in your inquiry.
Arrangements should be made as far in advance as possible. A few homes are suitable for just one guest, but most can accommodate travelling companions and some accept referred friends and family members.
As for payment … as a guest, you pay the host the recommended amount by cash or cheque. The host then donates this amount to the Foundation. When sending in the proceeds, the host is required to fill out a donor form to ensure that they receive a tax receipt. They should also include their grandmothers group name and “BWOB” to ensure that the Foundation can track the funds raised from this initiative.
Consider this programme when making travel plans for a weekend away or a major tour. It’s a great idea in every way. Travelling grandmothers get a room for much less than conventional hotels or B&Bs; it provides a great opportunity to meet and network with members of other groups in different parts of the country – and, of course, this is yet another way to raise funds for the indomitable grandmothers in Africa!
